The Basics — iPhone Privacy Setup in 10 Minutes

The baseline iPhone privacy settings everyone should have - passcode, Lock Screen, Face ID, Safety Check, updates, and the toggles that stop background data collection.

TL;DR: Eight steps, about 10 minutes, nothing to install. The first three matter most.

  1. Set a real passcode
  2. Decide on Face ID
  3. Lock down the Lock Screen
  4. Run Safety Check
  5. Turn off background data collection
  6. Protect your Apple Account
  7. Review networks and nearby access
  8. Keep iOS up to date

1. Set a Real Passcode

In Settings → Face ID & Passcode:

SettingChoose

Then set Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock to 1 Minute.

2. Decide How You Feel About Face ID

Face ID data stays on your iPhone, and you type your passcode in public less. Decide based on who can get hold of your phone.

In Settings → Face ID & Passcode:

3. Lock Down the Lock Screen

4. Run Apple’s Safety Check

It shows every person and app you share with in one place, so you can cut off anything you didn’t mean to keep.

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Safety Check.

  2. Tap Manage Sharing & Access and review people, apps, and devices.

  3. Revoke anything you don’t recognize or no longer use.

Apple and your apps can send usage and analytics data in the background. These switches stop most of it.
