Advanced Data Protection is one of the strongest iCloud security settings Apple offers. It expands end-to-end encryption to more iCloud data categories, including iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, and iCloud Drive.

The core difference is who holds the encryption keys. With standard iCloud protection, Apple can help unlock some iCloud data for recovery. With Advanced Data Protection enabled, the keys for more of your iCloud data stay with your trusted devices instead of being available to Apple.

This is a serious privacy upgrade, but it also changes account recovery. If you lose access to your trusted devices and your recovery method fails, Apple may not be able to help recover protected iCloud data. Set up recovery before enabling it.
